ONE MILLION MAN MATCH - A POLITICAL MUMBO JUMBO

S. O. Kazeem

Politicians all over the world are fun to watch, especially if you don't belong to the same party as them. The fun usually comes in the form of their boastfulness and excessive use of words to describe little things they have doing.

In Nigeria today the use of the phrase "one million man match" has become common among the politicians, and this is a general thing as it's not peculiar to any political party.

The politicians give the impression that they control the largest number of the potential electorate in the country no matter the part of the country they come from.

This common phrase became popular during the time of late General Sanni Abacha. When he was "chosen" as the Presidential candidate of almost all of the existing political parties in the country, they said they would organized a one million man prayer session for him, which they did, though "comically".

Today, for every campaign outing by politicians in the control, they boast of being welcome to the venue by a one million man supporters. That, obviously is a lie.

To know and fully understand the stupidity behind their claims of a one million man match exaggerated ego robbing boast, you should just take another look at the number of their followers on ground and see if such a crowd can fill up the biggest stadium in the world of today.

The largest football stadium in the world is the Rungrado 1st of May stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea, which has the capacity to hold 114,000 people at every single event.

My question is: can any person or political party mobilize a one million man spectators in this country and where would the venue for such gathering be?

In Abuja the main bowl of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium is designed to accommodate just 60,491 spectator seats. With the addition of those who may decide to stand and walk around, may be it could contain about 80,000 - 100,000 people.

All the claims of organizing the so-called one million man match by anybody, any group or any political party anywhere in this country is a big lie. Nothing like that has ever happened and can never happen. What's the total number of the members of each of these political parties anyway?
