OLOTO OF OTO: DO NOT SELL THE LAND - By Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (rtd.).

Image
OLOTO OF OTO: DO NOT SELL THE LAND - By Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju rtd. Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (rtd.) I have a lot of respect for our traditional rulers as the custodian of our culture, tradition and values. But I am beginning to wonder if some of our traditional rulers are actually protecting the Lagosian heritage. The case at hand here is the reported sale of Otumara land at Costain to an Igbo developer by the present Oloto of Oto Oba Muh’ Bashir Abisoye Odesanya, Arokunsha 11.  Over 6,000 square meters of prime lagoon front of expansive family estate has been hastily disposed off without regard to our norms, indifferent to our heritage and the long term impact of displacement and ethnic cleansing this insidious action may inflict on generations yet unborn. I don’t want to believe this potential sacrilege.  I write as a Prince of Lagos, as one who treasures the blood and the bond of our ancestors who protected our heritage with vigor and defiance...

Image
Lagos State News LASG SUES FOR CALM FROM RESIDENTS AS STATE EXPERIENCES OVER 12 HOURS OF HEAVY RAINFALL Lagos State Government on Monday called for calm from all residents of the state as the state has experienced heavy rainfall in the last 12 hours with an assurance that the state has put in place resilient infrastructure to combat flash flooding.  A statement signed by the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, informed residents that a new weather advisory from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency on Monday warned of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for the next three days.  He stated that it is not impossible that some parts of the state may experience flash flooding because of the inability of the major collectors not being able to contain the run-off resulting from the very heavy rainfalls. FROM THE STABLE OF GOVERNOR SANWO-OLU

Image
Today, I joined fellow governors and traditional rulers at a subcommittee meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the National Council of Traditional Rulers to review a proposed bill aimed at formally establishing the National Council of Traditional Rulers. This bill aims to alter the 1999 Constitution to give our traditional rulers a formal advisory role in governance especially on security, culture, and public order. Our traditional institutions have deep roots and hold a strong moral voice in our communities. They are often the first line of contact for many people, especially in rural and suburban areas. We cannot ignore the role they play in conflict resolution, maintaining order, and preserving our customs.  We intend to embrace all aspects of our identity and build inclusive governance systems that reflect the realities of our diverse nation.

I speak to you today with a heavy heart and a sense of responsibility, aware of the turmoil and violent protests unleashed in some of our states.   2. Notably among the protesters were young Nigerians who desired a better and more progressive country where their dreams, hopes, and personal aspirations would be fulfilled.   3. I am especially pained by the loss of lives in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna and other states, the destruction of public facilities in some states, and the wanton looting of supermarkets and shops, contrary to the promise of protest organisers that the protest would be peaceful across the country. The destruction of properties sets us back as a nation, as scarce resources will be again used to restore them.   4. I commisera...
